Here’s your weekly roundup of the latest health and wellness news! This week, our team shares these stories:
- New federal guidelines–what do you need to know? You should consider five things going forward with your workplace wellness program. Here are the big three: don’t force employees to participate, keep medical information confidential, and limit incentives.
- They say not to look at your neighbor’s paper in school, but if you lead a wellness program, it can be extremely helpful to see what others are doing. A recent survey by the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans revealed trends in workplace wellness such as the most popular fitness and nutrition initiatives (the top choices were wellness competitions, health coaching, and healthy food choices) and biggest barriers to program success (workers’ lack of time is a major one).
- A plant, a nap, and your dog. What do these things have in common? They are guaranteed to reduce anxiety, kill stress, and boost mood during the workday. Put a plant on your desk. Make like Da Vinci and nap more. Or, just bring your pup along if your workplace allows it–he’ll probably be happier, too.
- “Manly” yoga. A room full of women who can twist into pretzels may be intimating for some men. Here’s a solution: Broga. These new classes celebrate “physical over the spiritual, and strength over flexibility.”
- A company where 85 percent of employees are healthy. That would be Meredith, the corporation that puts out magazines such as Better Homes and Gardens and Allrecipes. Meredith’s CEO wants wellness to be his legacy, so he is steering the company wellness initiatives toward a focus on the whole person. Several weeks ago, the EEOC issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) that describes how Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) applies to employee wellness programs. The proposed rule amends the current ADA regulations to provide guidance to employers on how they may use incentives to encourage wellness-program participation, how disability-related inquiries should be handled and how medical examinations should be incorporated in to the programs. Nontraditional wellness initiatives are quickly taking the stage as top wellness benefits, according to the Workplace Wellness Trends survey from the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans. More traditional wellness initiatives like health risk assessments and flu shots remain popular among workplaces but the International Foundation noticed a growing emphasis on less traditional initiatives like mental health coverage (63%), encouraged vacation time (66%) and tuition reimbursement (63%). Men who crave the benefits of yoga, but recoil at sharing the experience with a room full of women are turning to Broga, a rugged take on the 3,000-year-old practice of movement and breath. Broga celebrates the physical over the spiritual, and strength over flexibility. Experts say it sets men free to flex tight hamstrings without hearing invocations to Hindu deities or feeling inept next to a woman twisted like a pretzel. “I consider myself an athletic guy, but have never been flexible and didn’t like the thought of embarrassing myself in front of a group of women,” said financial analyst Eric Wright, 22, of San Jose, California. Getting and staying healthy is part of a corporate attitude at Meredith that starts at the top. “Our CEO, Steve Lacy wants wellness to be his legacy, “says Director of Benefits and Wellness Tim O’Neil. “The goal is to help employees and their families live longer, healthier, happier lives – leading to an enjoyable retirement.” O’Neil says the wellness program focuses on the whole person. There are more than 200 fitness classes offered every month, but also ones to help employees manage their finances and reduce stress. Read more…
