Here’s your weekly roundup of the latest health and wellness news! This week, our team shares these stories:
- Where do we go from here? Workplace wellness continues to gain momentum, but employers need to sharpen their strategic focus. This survey gives some insight and advice on how to shape and shift your program into one that gets results.
- Quantifying world happiness. In the new World Happiness Report, Switzerland and the Nordic countries still top the list, meanwhile the U.S. isn’t in the top ten. The report attributes some of our unhappiness to having trust issues. But why should we believe them?
- The new surgeon general believes boosting health has nothing to do with medicine, but more to do with prevention. His mantra is this: eat healthy, stay physically active, focus on emotional and mental well-being, and stay away from drugs.
- Too stressed? Take a walk. After taking lunchtime walks, study subjects were more relaxed, enthusiastic, and less nervous in the afternoon. This is good news because it’s something that everyone can do if they set aside the time.
- The Airbnb of fitness. New website connects travelers with yoga classes, running and bike tours, hiking, and more. (It’s a seriously cool idea!)
- Milwaukee celebrated a major award. The city is aglow after winning its second Well City USA Award from WELCOA last week. The honor went to Well City Milwaukee, a joint force of more than 40 organizations that deliver wellness programs to 130,000 employees.

A movement is underway. Employers across the nation want to create healthy, high-performing workplaces. In fact, based on this year’s 6th Annual Wellness in the Workplace benchmarking survey, the majority of large employers (64%) want to create a culture of health. The world has come a long way since the first World Happiness Report in 2012. Happiness is increasingly considered a proper measure of social progress and a goal of public policy. So it is worth beginning with some history, before summarizing the present report. The data and analysis in the World Happiness Report 2013 have helped to satisfy, and perhaps to fuel, growing public interest in applying the science of happiness to public affairs. Readership thus far is about 1.5 million, 50% more than for the first World Happiness Report. That interest in turn encouraged a number of local and national experiments in measuring and improving happiness, as well as the production of the World Happiness Report 2015. Read more…

Over the past year, Vivek Murthy has unexpectedly become one of the most controversial figures in American politics. President Obama nominated him for the post of US surgeon general, the nation’s top spokesperson for public health, back in November 2013. The Senate then promptly blocked his nomination for more than a year, particularly after the National Rifle Association criticized a letter Murthy had co-signed in support of gun control measures. Murthy only got confirmed in December 2014 after some red-state Democrats who were losing their seats anyway decided to switch course and back him. Read more…

Ever get so stressed you want to tell your boss to go take a hike? Maybe you’d be better off if you took that advice yourself. New research finds that a half-hour walk at lunchtime promotes increased relaxation and reduced stress among office workers. “Walking… seems to have both energizing and relaxing properties in the workplace,” writes lead author Cecilie Thøgersen-Ntoumani, an associate professor in the Psychology and Speech Pathology School at Curtin University in Australia. Traveling can disrupt your fitness routine. There may be a gym in your hotel, but chances are it will be tiny and crowded. And although you could go for a run, setting off alone in an unfamiliar city might not be so appealing. Enter Tramaze, a Web site that connects travelers with yoga classes, boot camps, bike tours, hiking, kayaking and other fitness-focused excursions. “It’s not just going to a studio or gym but experiences where you can meet local people and have this active, fitness-related experience that doesn’t have to take away from your travel,” said Sheetal Patel, the founder of Tramaze (as in “travel” and “amaze”). Well City Milwaukee has earned Milwaukee its second Well City USA Award, making it the only city in the nation to receive the designation from the Wellness Council of America (WELCOA) twice. Well City Milwaukee is a collaboration between more than 40 Milwaukee-area businesses and organizations to deliver comprehensive, award-winning wellness programs to 130,000 employees in the greater Milwaukee area. It was launched in 2007 by five leading partners: The City of Milwaukee, the Greater Milwaukee Committee, the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee and the Wellness Council of Wisconsin.
It was a great celebration.
